Kinesiology (the science of human movement)
A comprehensive list of exercises using dumbells, barbells and machines, defining the primary and secondary muscle groups worked and the result of the exercise.
First, some definitions of terms used in the following pages:
- agonist - skeletal muscle which is a prime mover; mainly responsible for generating a specific movement by contracting
- synergist (dynamic) - assists the same joint motion as the agonist, sometimes referred to as a "neutralizer" because it cancels out any extra motion from the agonist, making sure that the force generated works within the desired plane of motion.
- fixator (static) - opposing muscles contract against each other and prevent movement, also termed isometric because it develops tension without changing length.
