Competition comeback -
Evening Telegraph 23 August 2005
On Sunday, September 18, 42-year-old Micky McKay will be competing in the qualifiers for the British Championships.
And helping with his comeback are people Mr McKay has been getting into shape in his role as a self-employed personal trainer.
The sportsman from Corby, who has been bodybuilding for 20 years, said:
"I will compete at Leamington Spa and part of the reason for me doing it is to show my clients the sort of shape you can get into if you put your mind to it, but also just for the love of the sport."
In preparation for the competition Mr.McKay has been training for two-and-a-half hours a day at Body Shapers Gym in School Lane, Kettering, and eating about 30lbs of chicken breasts and seven dozen egg whites a week. Assisting him in his quest are his clients, who have sponsored him by helping to pay for food and supplements which top £100 a week.
John Sneddon, 41, is a friend and client of Mr. McKay who has been training with him for three years. Mr.Sneddon, who owns JS Painters and Decorators said: "As I run my own business I thought I would help Micky with sponsorship as it can be quite expensive to go into these shows".
"When he mentioned about doing it I thought good on him, he works very hard and deserves success".
With four weeks to go Mr.McKay, who won Mr. Anglia at a novice level when he last competed, is ready to get back into competitions.
He said: "As it will be my first one back I am looking forward to getting more experience as it will have moved on from when I last competed and then really going for it next year".
